FADE IN:
EXT. RUSTED WHITE PICKUP TRUCK - AFTERNOONVICTOR and THOMAS are driving back to Washington after picking up VICTOR'S FATHER. VICTOR dusts off the backseat of the pickup. Two BOXES, one wooden and the other cardboard, carrying VICTOR'S FATHER'S ashes are set on the back seat. VICTOR places a cowboy hat on the wooden box and a Dodgers cap on the cardboard box.
VICTOR climbs into the driver's seat. THOMAS is already seated, with a plastic water bottle in hand.
VICTOR
Ready to head back home?
THOMAS
It's going to be a long drive.
VICTOR
Yeah, take a couple days, maybe.
THOMAS
We can take turns.
VICTOR (starts car)
Yeah.
They drive in silence. VICTOR stares straight ahead, while THOMAS looks out the window and watches as the sun sets.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. PICKUP TRUCK - NIGHT (DRIVING)
Time passes. Other than them, the road is desolate. THOMAS has fallen asleep. VICTOR occasionally glances over at THOMAS.
VICTOR decides to listen to the RADIO only to find that it's broken. VICTOR fidgets with it while keeping an eye on the road. Finally, the RADIO crackles in and out from a station, but the sound is unintelligible.
VICTOR listens for a bit before turning it off.
CUT TO:
INT. PICKUP TRUCK - DAWN (DRIVING)
VICTOR is still driving. He reaches for his TUMBLER to finish the final sips of his coffee. VICTOR yawns and starts to drift off.
CUT TO:
INT. PICKUP TRUCK - DAWN (DRIVING)
A HORN blares and jolts VICTOR awake.
VICTOR (swerves wheel)
Crap!
VICTOR looks over at THOMAS, who is still fast asleep. VICTOR shakes his head and pulls over at the next exit. The sun rises in the background.
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. PICKUP TRUCK - MORNING
VICTOR parks his car in front of a McDonald's. He shakes THOMAS awake.
VICTOR
Hey. You got to drive for a while.
THOMAS (groggy)
Uh, yeah. Okay.
VICTOR
I'm getting some food. You want anything?
THOMAS
Okay, sure. I'll come with you.
BOTH of them exit the car.
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. PICKUP TRUCK - AFTERNOON (DRIVING)
THOMAS drives while VICTOR looks off into the distance. VICTOR checks his PHONE, but there are no new messages. He turns it off.
The land around them is barren. In the distance, THOMAS spots a JACKRABBIT.
THOMAS (pointing)
Look! You see that?
THOMAS and VICTOR laugh, as it's the only sign of life they've seen in hours. The JACKRABBIT suddenly darts into the road.
VICTOR (yelling)
Stop the goddamn car!
THOMAS slams the brakes.
VICTOR
Oh, man. He's dead.
THOMAS
Really dead.
VICTOR
The only thing alive in this whole state and we just killed it.
THOMAS
I don't know, man. I think it was suicide.
BOTH of them look down at the squashed animal beneath their car in disbelief. They sit in silence for a bit. VICTOR looks out his window at the empty desert...
VICTOR
Yeah. It had to be suicide.
THOMAS
I can't believe this. You drive for a thousand miles and there ain't even any bugs on the windshield. I drive for ten seconds and kill the only living thing in Nevada.
VICTOR
Maybe I should drive.
THOMAS
Maybe you should.
FADE OUT.
